You just can't (or don't want to) imagine life without your best mates but chances are, you'll be faced with that reality one day. Just like encouraging clients to have family photos, I also encourage them to include their animals or have a special session with their four (or two) legged mates. Steph had a session a little while back but unfortunately since then, she lost both her little dog Molly, and more recently, her best mate, Weiser, both shown in this image. On the lead up to Anzac Day, I thought I'd post some portraits of some of the WWII diggers I photographed for the 'Reflections' Project organised by the AIPP back in 2015. In one of the most ambitious photographic projects to ever be undertaken in Australia, AIPP members from across the nation, volunteered their time to photograph WWII veterans 'to create a significant archive for the nation, that reflects a sensitive portrayal of their elderly state and profide a cognistant comparison to the wartime images of young active men and women'. 450 AIPP photographers took over two years to produce the 6,500 strong portrait collection, which sits proudly in the nation's capital, Canberra, The Australian War Memorial having become the new custodian of these images. "Looking into the faces of this remarkable generation of Australians now leaving us, is an emotional experience. They mobilised to defend us when our vital interest were at stake and gave their you and their all for us" Dr Brendan Nelson, Director, Australian War Memorial, Canberra. Syd Kirkland, late of Robe, joined the 9/23rd Light Horse, then the 2/12 armourned regiment before being posted to join the 2/9th armoured for training in Queensland. He reached the rank of Sergeant and was posted to the officer cadet training unit at Woodside with the temporary rank of warrant officer.
